Toshiba following in Western Digital’s footsteps with 14TB 3.5” Hard Drive

In October, Western Digital and HGST confirmed the ‘bigger and faster’ hard drive trend with their impressive Ultrastar Hs14 14TB Enterprise-class HDD. Now, just a couple of months later, Toshiba have unveiled their own 14TB helium drive.

“We have raised the bar with the new MG07ACA Series 9-disk helium-sealed design. By utilizing an innovative design, we continue to improve the benefits that high-capacity disk storage can deliver to our broad global customer base."
Akitoshi Iwata, VP of storage products division at Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage corporation.

Meet the MG07ACA

MG07ACA is the name Toshiba have given their latest range of hard drives, which is also the first enterprise 14TB Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDD. Using a 9-disk, helium-sealed design at 7,200rpm in a 3.5-inch form, the drive achieves the TCO required by cloud-scale and enterprise storage solutions, making this the perfect choice for mass storage enterprise applications.

The helium-sealed design is ideal for performance applications, as it allows for reduced drag when compared to traditional hard drives, allowing for greater performance at an increased efficiency. To put this into real world figures, the 14TB model delivers up to 50% improved power efficiency (W/GB).

The drive supports a 6Gb SATA interface at 7,200rpm, with the 9-disk technology allowing for significantly improved capacities, suggesting that we can expect to see storage capacities continue to rise with future generations. Speculation has even arisen about hard drives reaching capacities of up to 20TB over the next few years.

The new hard drive is also rated at 2.5 million hours MTBF, which results in impressive reliability, giving enterprise users the peace-of-mind when it comes to their data.
