HOW IS CYBER SECURITY EVOLVING?

Cyber security has become an increasingly complex and sophisticated area in recent years. While the extent and nature of threats continues to evolve, the market is also being driven by the increasing reliance of organisations on tech, the way that tech is changing at speed, as well as the constantly shifting landscape of regulation and red tape. This makes it essential to stay on top of how cyber security is evolving.

PROFESSIONAL CYBER CRIMINALS

New and emerging technologies are now often the focus for cyber criminals who are driven by the promise of vast profits to set up increasingly professionalised operations. As digital transformation continues at a fast pace for many businesses, there are opportunities for cyber criminals to seek out vulnerabilities to exploit.

A huge range of different options for data and services, the shift towards remote working, and the adoption of a hybrid IT infrastructure by a larger number of organisations is creating a much broader enterprise attack surface for criminals to focus on. Methods of attack include social engineering designed to take advantage of a lack of understanding of new software and systems, as well as targeting unencrypted business data that is accessed via remote workforces.

WHAT IS DRIVING CHANGE IN CYBER SECURITY?

The increasing dominance of the cloud is one of the biggest factors, especially because the pandemic has accelerated the necessity of a cloud-first strategy for many organisations. Change has also been driven by the need to integrate protection for emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as the move towards architectures using microservices and DevOps and DevSecOps.

Established cyber technologies such as endpoint protection, detection and response (EPDR), unified endpoint management (UEM) and data leakage prevention (DLP) are likely to grow and evolve to provide a firmer foundation for cyber defence. We are also going to see emerging technologies added into the mix for more effective protection, including network detection and response (NDR), extended detection and response (XDR) and secure information-sharing, security for business applications.

HOW ARE ORGANISATIONS RESPONDING TO CHANGES IN THREATS AND RESPONSES?

The key response for many organisations has been to develop IT-focused roles within the business and establish closer alignment between business continuity and cyber security. For some time, these have existed in isolation from one another and the result has often been challenging if a cyber security disaster has occurred. However, recent events have forced a rethink. Not just in regard to the ongoing increase in the volume and sophistication of threats, but also how remote working styles that have resulted from the pandemic open businesses up to new threats not previously encountered.

As a result, the role of Chief Information Security Officer has been heightened within many businesses. There has also been a concerted effort to ensure that cyber security and business goals are integrated. Other key areas of focus include supply chain cyber security, building awareness and competencies in cyber security across the business and investing in identity-based security.

Cyber security and the way that your business uses IT are inextricably linked. WORKING FROM HOME – PRODUCTIVITY!

Work From Home- Work, Family & Productivity

We all miss travelling. Travelling to far off places, visiting friends and family. But do you really miss travelling to meetings or into the office? Probably not.

Working from home saves time, money and stress- remember running to catch the train? Needing to leave the house while it’s still dark on a cold and frosty morning?

WFH in a pandemic can be challenging, but a lot has been learnt around what is important. WFH has obvious benefits, too, but certain skills and tools are required to do it well.

Communication, discipline, motivation, trustworthiness and adaptability are all vital to succeed in working from home.

It is up to both the organisation and the individual employee to ensure working from home is a success.

EMPLOYEES

As the employee, ensure you have a dedicated workspace- somewhere that you can close the door and shut out any distractions. Also, it should be somewhere that you can “step away from work”.

Set yourself specific routines and work schedules so that those around you understand when you are/ are not working.

Dress professionally to get into the right mindset.

Invest intelligently into your home office- would multiple monitors simplify your job? Ensure you have a powerful enough computer and solid wi-fi; or perhaps directly plugging in is better? Invest in a good, ergonomic chair and a suitable desk. A good microphone and headphones will ensure nothing gets missed in all those video conferences. How is the lighting? Perhaps a ring-

light or similar will improve the way you show up on screen.

ORGANIZATIONS

Organisations should streamline the official tools that employees should be using. There are so many virtual meetings, chat, documentation , project and other management tools out there- keeping those streamlined ensures consistency and efficiency.

Organisations should also establish and provide policies and training around laptops, internet services and security. Awareness and training around what could go wrong will save the organisation a lot of pain and money down the line.

Organisations should help the workforce feel productive and connected from home.

Technology is critical to helping people stay connected at a time where we are asked to isolate. The better the IT team can make a successful transition, the more they can help the workforce feel empowered and find new ways to keep motivation high.

A thoughtful approach to working from home from both the employee and the organisation allows you to be productive, happy and very successful. And no need to be running for those trains…

FORTINET DRIVING ACTIVITY

Fortinet secures the largest enterprise, service provider, and government organizations around the world. Fortinet empowers its customers with intelligent, seamless protection across the expanding attack surface and the power to take on ever-increasing performance requirements of the borderless network . Only the Fortinet Security Fabric architecture can deliver security without compromise to address the most critical security challenges, whether in networked, application, cloud, or mobile environments.

The world has transitioned to a digital business model, where organizations in every sector and region now run on applications. And at the same time, the number of network edges that IT teams need to manage has exploded, especially as huge sections of the workforce have transitioned to working from home. This new business model is built around fast access to information, high-performance applications, instant collaboration, and customized experiences for both workers and consumers.

In these environments, criminals exploit distributed networks and fragmented security to target companies with increasingly sophisticated malware designed to steal data, corrupt systems, and even disrupt the economy. Experts estimate that the cost of cybercrime to organizations worldwide is more than $100 billion, with business interruptions accounting for 60% of losses.

Why Fortinet?

Fortinet has an unrelenting commitment to innovation. Their security solutions are designed to address the way today’s companies do business.

All of their solutions are built around a common operating system, FortiOS. This common foundation enables interoperability between technologies, extends visibility, enhances control, and enables unified management and orchestration.
