HPE StoreEver MSL3040
3U → 21U · Up to 12.6 PB (LTO-9, 2.5:1)
The actively-developed LTO-9 library — 40 to 280 cartridge slots and up to 21 half-height drives across stackable 3U modules. Scales a module at a time as retention grows.
StoreEver MSL — high-density
HPE StoreEver MSL6480
6U → 42U · Up to 16.8 PB (LTO-8, 2.5:1)

Frequently asked questions
How is tape capacity calculated here?
Capacity comes from cartridge slots × cartridge size, not drive count. We multiply your total slots (the library base plus any expansion modules) by the native capacity of your chosen LTO generation — 18 TB for LTO-9, 12 TB for LTO-8 — and show the 2.5:1 compressed figure too. Drives add throughput (parallel backup streams), not capacity.
Can I configure new and refurbished tape?
Yes — use the New / Refurbished toggle. The MSL libraries are a current platform, so refurbished here means re-certified, NIST-handled libraries and (especially) re-certified LTO drives, which commonly sell at up to ~80% below new — the single biggest saving in any tape estate.
LTO-9 or LTO-8 — which should I choose?
LTO-9 (18 TB native / 45 TB compressed) is current and best for new long-term retention; LTO-8 (12/30 TB) is cheaper, especially refurbished. LTO-9 drives read and write LTO-9 and read/write LTO-8, so an LTO-9 library still works with an existing LTO-8 cartridge estate.
SAS or Fibre Channel connectivity?
SAS (6/12 Gb) is the simplest and cheapest for a directly-attached backup server; Fibre Channel (8 Gb) suits a shared SAN fabric where multiple hosts or a backup appliance present to the library. We can advise on zoning and drive/partition layout for your backup software.
Why tape in the cloud era?
An ejected cartridge is physically air-gapped — offline and immutable in a way no online disk or cloud bucket can match, which makes it the copy ransomware cannot encrypt. Tape is also the lowest cost per terabyte for cold data and is rated for decades of archival life. It complements disk and cloud in a 3-2-1-1-0 strategy.
Does Servnet supply and support StoreEver in the UK?
Yes — Servnet is a 24-year HPE partner. We quote, supply, optionally install and integrate the library with your backup software (Veeam, Commvault and others), and support it across the UK, with media and WORM cartridges available alongside the hardware.
