Three families, two operating systems
DG and DM run NetApp ONTAP for unified, data-services-rich storage; DE runs SANtricity for throughput-focused block. One vendor, matched to the job.
ThinkSystem DG
All-flash · ONTAPAll-flash arrays built on NetApp ONTAP — enterprise data management (snapshots, replication, tiering) on Lenovo hardware. The performance-led ThinkSystem storage line for virtualisation, databases and mixed workloads.
ThinkSystem DM
Unified · ONTAPUnified block + file arrays (e.g. DM5100F, DM7100F/H, DM3000) on ONTAP — one system serving SAN and NAS for consolidation, with the full ONTAP data-services and hybrid-cloud toolset.
ThinkSystem DE
Block · SANtricityBlock arrays (DE4000, DE6400) on the SANtricity OS — straightforward, high-throughput block storage for HPC, media, video surveillance and bandwidth-hungry workloads where simplicity and price-per-IOP matter.

Enterprise storage, on your terms
One vendor for the whole stack
Run ThinkSystem servers, ThinkAgile HCI and ThinkSystem storage from a single vendor — one support relationship, one roadmap, one set of management tooling, fewer fingers to point when something needs fixing.
Built on NetApp ONTAP (DG / DM)
The DG and DM families run NetApp ONTAP, so you get mature enterprise data management — snapshots, SnapMirror replication, efficiency and hybrid-cloud tiering — on Lenovo hardware. Enterprise capability without a new skill set.
SANtricity throughput (DE)
The DE family runs SANtricity — purpose-built block storage tuned for sustained bandwidth. Ideal for HPC scratch, media/post-production and high-ingest workloads where raw throughput and simplicity win.
Enterprise data protection
ONTAP brings snapshots, replication, data-at-rest encryption and Autonomous Ransomware Protection to DG/DM; DE provides robust block-level data protection — so resilience is built in, not bolted on.
TruScale — storage as a service
Lenovo TruScale delivers ThinkSystem storage on a pay-as-you-grow, consumption basis — align cost to actual usage and avoid over-provisioning, with Lenovo managing the underlying capacity.

Lenovo ThinkSystem storage — common questions
What is the Lenovo–NetApp relationship in ThinkSystem storage?
Lenovo’s ThinkSystem DG and DM families are built on NetApp ONTAP under a long-standing Lenovo–NetApp partnership — Lenovo hardware running ONTAP, supported by Lenovo. The DE family is different: it runs the SANtricity operating system for block workloads. So DG/DM = ONTAP (unified, data-services-rich), DE = SANtricity (block, throughput-focused).
DG, DM or DE — which ThinkSystem storage do I need?
Choose DG for performance-led all-flash with ONTAP data management; DM for unified block + file consolidation on ONTAP; and DE for straightforward, high-throughput block storage (HPC, media, surveillance) on SANtricity. If you already run ThinkSystem servers, any of these keeps you on one vendor. Tell us the workload, or use the Storage Solution Finder, and we’ll map it.
Is Lenovo ThinkSystem storage just rebranded NetApp?
For DG and DM the data management is NetApp ONTAP — so the software experience is familiar — but the hardware, integration with ThinkSystem/ThinkAgile, TruScale consumption and the support relationship are Lenovo’s. If your priority is the ONTAP/BlueXP cloud-data story itself, see our NetApp storage page; if it’s a single-vendor Lenovo stack with enterprise data services, ThinkSystem storage is the fit.
What data-protection features do I get?
On DG/DM (ONTAP): application-consistent snapshots, SnapMirror replication for DR, data-at-rest encryption and Autonomous Ransomware Protection. On DE (SANtricity): block-level snapshots, synchronous/asynchronous mirroring and drive encryption. Both give a solid resilience baseline; we’ll match the protection tier to your RPO/RTO.
When should I choose Lenovo storage over the alternatives?
Lenovo ThinkSystem storage is strongest when you want a single-vendor Lenovo stack (servers + storage + support), enterprise ONTAP data services on Lenovo hardware, or cost-effective block throughput (DE). For other priorities — pure ONTAP/cloud (NetApp), simplicity (Pure), HCI (Nutanix) — we’ll compare impartially. See cost-optimised enterprise storage or size it in the Storage Solution Finder.
